St John’s Church, Harpenden - Stewardship

The word 'stewardship' is now often used in common parlance, for instance, environmentalists will speak of humanity having a stewardship of the planet. What is implied is that control and decision making for the world and its resources is entrusted to those who cannot claim outright possession and ownership.

Stewardship has, for a long time, been used in a religious way to express something of the relationship between God and his people. This relationship expresses the truth that God is the creator and author of all that there is. Thus the world and our very place in it owe their existence to the creating and ongoing dynamic love of God. We are stewards of all that God has given to us and especially of the gifts and abilities with which he has blessed us and by which we make our living.

The Church exists to proclaim the truth about God and his wonderful love in sending his Son Jesus Christ into the world to seek out and save humanity. Those of us who acknowledge this truth recognise that we have a responsibility of stewardship to help in the Church's task of proclamation. We recognise this simply as a disposition of discipleship; to dedicate some of our financial resources to promote the work of the Gospel, the good news of God's saving love. In so doing we respond in faith and love to the Lord who has called us into the fellowship of believers.

St John's is pleased to have a stewardship scheme which helps us to carry out our mission and ministry. This is an integral part of our discipleship as we consider prayerfully how we should use our gifts from God. Anyone interested in joining the scheme or needing further information should contact our Stewardship Team (details on the Contact Us page).
